What to Do When the Marriage is Over

Q: I've just been served with divorce papers. What do I do?

 

You should NOT ignore it, or otherwise delay in dealing with it. Your legal rights regarding support or property could be compromised if you don't promptly address the complaint. In this instance, you need to know your rights, and should obtain counsel. Many attorneys offer an initial hour of consultation for a nominal fee, which is well worth the time and expense. While you may not like what you hear, it is imperative to understand what faces you. Most jurisdictions also offer divorce mediation programs, and have resource options to assist those who cannot afford an attorney. Your local state or county bar association or Legal Aid Office can point you in the right direction.

Be prepared to document and inventory all of your assets, income and cost of living expenses, and ensure that your bank accounts are secured.
