Here are some new developments that can help you avoid holiday weight gain and make it to the New Year with one less resolution on your list:

Dining Out Details: If you knew how many calories were in that side order of creamed spinach you might have decided to opt for a side order of steamed broccoli instead. And the following may be coming to Morton's Steakhouse and other chain restaurants with at least 20 locations nearest you. The State of California just became the first state to require restaurants to list their nutrition information on menus and menu boards, as their health conscious Governor signed this law designed to address health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Laws similar to California's have been passed in communities such as New York City, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.

- - Supermarket Smarts: To help consumers make quicker and more sensible food choices at the grocery store, many supermarkets will be implementing a new, easier to comprehend nutrition rating standard. NuVal, which was developed by a team nutrition and health experts, ranks foods from 1 to 100 based on nutrients, vitamins, sugars and salt, as well as impact on blood pressure and other health concerns. So far two local supermarket chains in the United States have adopted the system and another 15 chains representing 5,000 stores are expected to join up early next year. Shoppers will see the hexagonal NuVal, logo with a score on the shelf next to the price tag.

But if you're overeating during the holidays or are cooped up indoors you may just want to get on board with this. The programs feature dozens of activities based on strength training, aerobics, and yoga, as well as a calendar that tracks goals such as weight loss or improved flexibility. At $89.99 it may not be a simple stocking stuffer, but it still makes for a good holiday gift.

 

You start off the off the holiday season by unconsciously consuming a whole crop of candy corn around Halloween, followed by a whopping Thanksgiving meal and many more days in December of holiday party finger foods and calorie-laden cocktails.
