Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Treatment Brattleboro VT

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in Brattleboro is called a "syndrome" because it is a group of symptoms which may include: abdominal cramping, gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. No one knows exactly what causes it. The muscles in the large intestine or colon appear to be more sensitive in people with IBS, and as a result may contract too much after a person eats.

Is IBS a Cause for my Sudden Cramps?

Q: Can you tell me more about irritable bowel syndrome? What causes it and what are the symptoms? How is it different from lactose intolerance? Who does it affect and at what age is it brought on? Also, is there a treatment for it?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is called a "syndrome" because it is a group of symptoms which may include: abdominal cramping, gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. No one knows exactly what causes it. The muscles in the large intestine or colon appear to be more sensitive in people with IBS, and as a result may contract too much after a person eats.

Lactose intolerance, on the other hand, is an intolerance to milk and some dairy products. The symptoms sometimes look similar but people with lactose intolerance don't have enough of the enzyme lactase to digest the sugars in dairy foods.

Although IBS has no cure, there a few things you can do to lessen the symptoms. Treatment includes: dietary changes, medication and stress relief. It's important to consult your doctor to find a plan that works well for you.
